Rooftop Gardening 2020 : amid lockdown
Due to these lockdowns, you can't really get out of the house and this has let gardening into the trends. Gardening is something you can easily practice at home. And one such type of gardening is Terrace Gardening / Rooftop Gardening

What is Rooftop Gardening :

Rooftop Gardening is simply a garden that you set up on your terrace. Now what I mean by Garden is not park.  What is meant by this is planting your plants up in the terrace.  Rooftop Gardening is sometimes also referred to as Terrace Gardening. Terrace Gardening is not actually a very common practice but if you are living in a city where you can't really get much space for plants, then Terrace/ Rooftop Gardening is the best alternative that you can possibly have.

Practicing Rooftop gardening can be a really great idea in Urban cities. With the increase in population and drop in resources, gardening is something one would prefer at the end. But rooftop Gardening is something that will save you on a lot of space.

However Rooftop Gardening is not a modern innovation. Planting upon rooftops is something which was practiced even in the ancient Mesopotamia [ an ancient civilization which flourished in the western parts of Asia ]. Although it is quite an easy alternative to Home Gardening there are a few things that you should keep in mind while practicing it. Sunlight, Rains, Winds are some of the many factors which you'll need to consider before starting off with Rooftop Gardening.

Rooftop Gardening is something that people also practice for decoration Well that's a great idea too. But whatever your goal is, Rooftop Gardening is something that will get you into a bit extra work of maintaining it from time to time. Its the only side effect this thing has.

How to start off with it :

So it is not so easy to start off with Terrace Gardening. You need some good plans and ideas for getting it started. Below I will be covering some of those very important points to keep in mind while starting and practicing Rooftop Gardening.  And to add a little spice to it I will also be providing you'll with an easy to understand table which you'll can also print* [ Terms and condition apply] for reading the terms and conditions scroll right to the end of the article. I am sure the table will be useful

Design your Garden: Design your Rooftop Garden yourself. Think and imagine how you want your Rooftop to look like? Do you want it to be full of plants? Do you want some space left? You have to plan accordingly. You should make full use of your space right. According to me if you are practicing Rooftop Gardening for a decoration purpose or just for hobby [ like me ! ] then you should make use of your space wisely and prepare for it before you can actually start the gardening work.

On the other hand, if you're practicing Rooftop Gardening for making yourself self-sufficient and planting veggies and all that stuff; then I recommend you'll to make full use of your space. But even in this case, you need to plan accordingly as you want some space up on your roof and not a roof full of overgrowing plants :)

Consult an Engineer: The very next thing you do after you have decided what to do with that Roof space, is consulting an engineer. If you think that your roof is very strong and you don't need an engineer, then you are wrong.

The primary factor for consulting an engineer is to check how strong your roof structure is. You of course don't want the roof to fall on you one day. Hence it is advisable for taking consultation from an engineer. It is very important for your Rooftop to be strong and hard enough that it can support the weight of all your plants up there.

The second main reason for consulting an engineer is water leakage. If you're planting many plants up on your roof, then you will, of course, be needing water in equal proportions to water them. If in case your roof has some leakage issues then there is a high possibility that the water will drip down into your house. And this is something you definitely d
on't want to happen.

Weather Conditions : Weather conditions is something that you'll have to look for very often if you're planning to practice Rooftop Gardening. You'll have to consider the weather condition before you plant your plants and start the other process as mentioned above. This is very important not only for Rooftop Gardening but also for any other kind of gardening. The mere reason behind this is, if you being in Canada are planting a plant native to warm and dessert-like regions then it will not probably survive there. I have a completely different article on Native and Indigenous plants. If interested then you can click here to view it.

Weather is an important factor even after you have planted your plants. Because you have your plants planted on rooftops, they are easily vulnerable to adverse weather conditions. Excessive rains, storms, and very strong winds can blow your plant off. For this you need to set up a suitable covering on your roof and check it from time to time.

What will you plant ? : Selecting a proper plant to grow is important. As mentioned above you don't want your plants to die. You will have to select which plant you want to grow quite carefully. You will need to take into account the weather conditions, the amount of water that plant needs, and many more such things.

Of these I have already discussed weather conditions and now I would like to highlight watering and nutrients. The water needed for different plants is different. If you plant a Sago Palm tree and water it too recently then it is less likely to live and flourish. This is because Sago palm trees need very less water. Similarly the water requirements of different plants are different. You should take this into account before handed.

Nutrients are another important factor. The nutrient requirements of different plants are different. using natural fertilizers can be handy in such cases. You can use/buy vermicompost or make natural fertilizers yourself at home and then mix them with the soil.

Further process :

The further process is very simple yet important. This is follow the process mentioned above.
  1. Look after the plants
  2. Take care of the water requirements
  3. Always monitor your weather conditions
  4. And last of all make sure your roof doesn't get overloaded as mentioned above, you don't want that roof to fall on you!
